DACS Web and Graphic Design SIG

The DACS Web Design Workshop is on temporary hiatus. Tentative start up again in April 2017.

Please visit the Posts and Tutorials page for details about the next meeting and posts describing past meeting presentations.

avo3The SIG covers web site design & development as well as graphics & desktop publishing. These monthly meetings are moderated by Annette van Ommeren, and usually start with a short presentation followed by demonstrations and “how to” of the topic covered. Questions are always welcomed, and discussions liven up the evening.

Although we explore web design and development, we don’t go too deep into programming languages, but we do touch on ways to tweak or edit code – HTML and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) PHP etc. More emphasis is given to Content Management Systems (CMS) such as WordPress.

logobarWhether you are a beginner, or a code-warrior, there will be something to learn. Demonstrating WYSIWYG software, and discussing the different programs available (Dreamweaver, Photoshop etc) will help you get up to speed. Meetings also tackle topics such as web page usability, browser inconsistencies, site promotion, dynamic programming, image optimizing, and anything that relates to web development.

Occasionally, and if requested, the meeting subject may relate to print production, or DTP. Good design and consideration of the end user’s experience is always important, but there are significant differences to consider when preparing for print or screen. Print requires unique file preparation, and what works for screen may not work for print.

Bring your questions and concerns. In an interactive setting, we will make sense of the steps needed and how to avoid the pitfalls involved in web page creation as well as print production, both from the design perspective as well as from dealing with technical constraints.

This SIG meets every 3rd Tuesday of the month, 7pm – 9pm, at the DACS resources center in Danbury, CT. See the DACS website for additional information about other SIG meetings that might be of interest.
