The above links show varieties of design.
Always consider the targeted viewer - who are they? Who is going to view your site?
How web-savy are they?
What sort of equipment might they have?
(Browser stats: 45%==IE6, 25%=IE7)
(Resolution: 50% 1024x768, 10%-20%: 800x600)

Resolution size – set up in PS as 760 x 600 to start (or 1024 or whatever)
Use guide lines to allow for browser chrome.
In Photoshop use the tab key to toggle the menus on and off. Makes it easier to see the whole screen.
Use layers in Photoshop to fine tune locations of elements

Usually reserve the top & left for navigation and logo.
(but know when to bend the rules!)

For any patterend background, (!) make a small image to tile

Design with DIV’S and HTML in mind. (how are you going to make a design a working site?)

Colors to consider - avoid distraction, consider contrast of text, printable versions with CSS

Use of Pattern / texture VS flat VS gradients etc
